PageRank is a number (from a low of 0 to a high of 10) that represents the significance of a website on the web that is based on the value of its' content. It is a mathematical formulation (algorithm) first developed by the co-founder of Google, Larry Page (consequently the label Page-Rank).

So now in the preceding example, if your website is able to obtain a back-link coming from a Page rank level 4 site, your web site will get a portion of the 625 PageRank weight. The quantity of weight your website will receive is as well based on an equation.

The total amount of PR weight that one website can provide to another web site by way of linking into it is 85% of its own PR weight. So in the example above, a PR 4 website should pass on weight of 625 Times .85 or 531.25.

Now there is one more element that comes into play. The exact amount of weight your site could truly receive is determined by how many other sites are being linked to by that PR 4 website. The obtainable link weight is equally divided up amongst all the outbound links. So, if your website was the only one the PR 4 internet site was back linking to, you would receive all of the 531.25 weight. What exactly should all this actually mean. Well on the upside, your website can go from a PR 0 to a PR 4 simply by getting a back link from a PR 5 site that has 3 or less other back-links. The negative news is when that other site adds one more back-link, you'll drop from a Page rank 4 to a PR 3!
